CAMMO The Center For American Military Music Opportunities is an organization dedicated to the positive perpetuation and advancement of the artistic and technical abilities of our Veterans and Service Members.   As a CENTER it provides a hub where AMERICAN MILITARY MUSIC artists, technicians and musicians can go to find information about OPPORTUNITIES in the field of the Arts.   Programming will also extend to the development and execution of Music Therapy programs, which will focus on service related conditions such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury.

In addition to the current operations in the Northern Virginia and Washington DC areas, plans for acquiring or building physical CENTERS in Nashville, Los Angeles, New York, Austin and other locations throughout the United States have are underway.  Ideally each of these locations will have an educational component in partnership with a local university, a residence hall or housing arrangements, rehearsal space, studios, offices and a music therapy wing.

The “Centers” will have 3 distinct goals:

1. To create therapeutic programming and outlets for service members and veterans.
2. To train and educate veterans in music industry related job skills
3. To develop top notch music artists and serve as an outlet for those who wish to pursue music as an avocation or as an experiential therapeutic outlet.

What is CAMMO?

WHAT IS MUSIC THERAPY?

“Music therapy is the specialized use of music by a credentialed professional who develops individualized treatment and supportive interventions for people of all ages and ability levels to address their social, communication, emotional, physical, cognitive, sensory and spiritual needs.”    Certification Board for Music Therapists
Music therapy is an established health care profession recognized as a viable treatment option by many, including the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the National Intrepid Center of Excellence.

Music therapy is a powerful, noninvasive, and nonpharmacological medium capable of unique outcomes.  Music therapy is accessible to all and can be used with individuals, groups, or families.   Clients need no prior music training to receive services but benefit by active engagement in the therapeutic process which may include creating, learning, listening to, or performing music.

After assessing the strengths and needs of each client, the trained music therapist designs and implements a wide variety of music therapy interventions based on a) the best available evidence from research and clinical literature, b) the therapist’s training, expertise and specializations, and c) the client’s needs and preferences.  The effectiveness of treatment is determined through continued assessment and evaluation of the client’s progress towards therapy goals.

STAFF
All CAMMO music therapists have received a degree in music therapy from an accredited college or university, completed a clinical internship in music therapy, and passed a national exam, thus being granted the credential Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC) by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT).  CAMMO music therapists have completed advanced training in neurologic music therapy or other specialty areas.

For more information about credentialing for music therapists, visit the webpage of the Certification Board for Music Therapists at www.cbmt.org

WHAT IS NEUROLOGIC MUSIC THERAPY?

Neurologic music therapy (NMT) is an advanced form of music therapy that uses evidence-based techniques to treat the brain.  These techniques emphasize the use of music and rhythm to achieve non-musical goals in the areas of cognition, physical movement, and speech.  The Center for Biomedical Research in Music defines NMT as “the therapeutic application of music to cognitive, sensory, and motor dysfunctions due to disease of the human nervous system.”
Research has demonstrated that music and rhythm affects multiple areas of the brain simultaneously and that the brain that engages in music is actually changed by that engagement.  Music can help build new neural connections in the brain through experience and exposure, thus improving rehabilitative potential and the ability of the brain to “rewire” itself after trauma or injury, allowing individuals to lead more productive and functional lives.

The deafening shock of explosions the ping of rifle bullets or the hammering of automatic weapons over the anguished cry of wounded comrades are some of the sounds of modern war. There are also other sounds. Troops today, like warriors of every era, use music to cope with the stress of battle.

The Centers for American Military Music Opportunities will be where Veterans, Active Duty and Reserve and Guard service member will have the opportunity to train and develop in several aspects of the music business.
